Achievement To Old Akko's Residents

Story
Residents of Old Akko prevented a tender to build a 200-room hotel complex in the Khan compound-
a UNESCO World Heritage site. The project calls for the evacuation of 36 families living in the area. Residents began a struggle for their homes. According to them, the tender is discriminatory as they were not given an option to purchase the houses where they live as ‘protected’ tenants. On Sunday (261/1/2014), the tender began, but not one bid was tendered. The court stated that "the bidding process was concluded without results." The Association for Distributive Justice and the Jiran Center see this as a great achievement for residents of Old Akko, but add that it is only one step in a broader struggle.
